Local Mock Trial Team Fundraiser

Just Goods

This team of juniors from John Adams High School is planning to compete in the Empire Mock Trials event in New York City this November.   During the month of September, 25% of purchases made using their promo code (Mock Trial) will be donated to the team.  This is a win-win for the team as well as the makers of the products.  All goods are made by local artists, US companies or fair trade groups.

Orders can be picked up in early October, or customers can choose to have orders shipped.

Great Gifts for Men

Just Goods

So here's what I will be getting for the guys in my life this holiday season.

My brother:  wool socks.  He appreciates the "Made in the USA' aspect, as well as the practical nature of the gift.

Teacher guy:  coffee, roasted here in South Bend.  Good tasting brew. (And, yes, it's also direct trade or fair trade, and shade grown . . . )

20-something guy:  We do a $20 extended-family gift exchange which includes many nephews we don't see but a few times a year:  Flowfold Minimalist Wallet (with a $10 bill stuffed inside - forget those plastic gift cards to chain stores and cafes.) $9.95.

Our 13 year old son:  Solmate Socks.  He loves good socks. $20.

Our 15 year old son's Mock Trial coach:  Liberty Water Bottle.  This is a no-brainer.  Everyone needs a good water bottle, and there is so much to love about this company, and its product! $24.

Our 15 year old son:  Rock'nSocks (perhaps with a concert ticket stuffed inside).  Another great American company.  These socks are just fun, and edgy enough that a teenager can appreciate them. $14.

My spouse:  New York Puzzle Co. jigsaw.  Yes, old fashioned, but that's my guy.  He loves doing a puzzle at the holidays and these come in a variety of sizes for puzzle lovers of all ages and seriousness levels. $14-18.

Any guy:  The Pocket Disc sports edition.  This crocheted frisbee is fair trade and it really flies!  This will get people up off the couch and creating all kinds of games everyone can play. $16.

The little guy:  Rescue Crew figures by Plan Toys.   Lots of room for imagination and adventures with these super-sustainable heroes.  Set of 4 figures, $15.

The tiny guy:  Zooties booties, made in Kyrgyzstan.  I must admit, even if these weren't amazingly fun, cute, warm, and well-made, I  might get them just because like saying "Kyrgyzstan" even if I can't spell it!   $23.

Inge Herre Deneen

pastedGraphic.png

Inge Herre Deneen learned to knit as a child growing up in Germany, knitting through high school and college. Not about to leave her needles behind when she moved to the United States, she safely tucked them away in her luggage. Developing her own patterns began as a necessity, but soon she realized she had a valuable skill that allowed her to customize her knitting and to design sweaters, cardigans and other knitwear. She loves to experiment with texture and color.

Inge has taught knitting and fiber arts since 2009, first in Alexandria, VA and more recently in Indiana and Michigan. In 2013 she launched “fiber accent”, a line of hand dyed yarns and fibers available at Just Goods.

Intro to Homeopathy Class 10/29 & 11/5

Becky

homeopathy
homeopathy

Homeopathy is a safe, effective, elegant system of natural medicine used worldwide for over 200 years. Recognized by the US FDA, homeopathic remedies are non-toxic and can be safely used with infants, children, adults and animals. Unlike conventional medicine, homeopathic remedies are selected on the basis of the patient's unique symptom profile - physical, mental and emotional - thus bringing about deep healing and equilibrium without toxic side effects. In this two-session course, Christine Fiordalis, lay practitioner and long time student of homeopathy, introduces the basics of homeopathy, why it is important and how we can utilize it in our own lives.

In preparation, you may wish to read "Beyond Flat Earth Medicine," by Dr. Timothy Dooley. This excellent, easily-read introductory book will help you get the most out of the course. It may be read at no charge online at http://www.beyondflatearth.com/. (It's worth reading even if you don't attend the course!)

Please join us as we explore the possibilities of this sustainable, truly curative medicine! Two Wednesday evenings, October 29 & November 5, 6:00-8:00 pm.

$30 for both sessions, includes the book " Everybody's Guide to Homeopathic Medicine," by Stephens Cummings, MD and Dana Ullman, MPH.

Register and prepay by October 21 - at the shop, or by calling (574-286-5878) or emailing us.  Cost:  $30.

Becky

Soapmaking with Wine Class

September 5th  5:30 - 8pm

November 7th 5:30 - 8pm

Red Wine in your soap? Yes, Ladies!! Can you possibly get any more glam than this?

We'll be doing a little tasting + you'll get to take home 5 bars of soap (that's a whopping pound of soap!) you made yourself and a handout with recipes and great information.

~~~
The nuts and bolds...
Cold process soapmaking - is a time honored, and to date still the most popular method because you get to control just exactly what beautiful oils and butters will go into your soap and what the end result will be. You'll learn about real, raw, unadulturated ingredients in soap crafting such as the positively mesmerizing scent of unrefined cocoa butter.
You will get to do the measuring, mixing, blending stirring and any other process that is involved in creating gorgeous handcrafted soap. Get your girls together for a few hours of unbridled fun!
Participants are encouraged to bring a pair of safety classes (I also always have extra on hand) and wear long sleeves and closed toe shoes.  Register and prepay at the shop, or by calling (574-286-5878) or
emailing
us.  Cost:  $50 per class.
Sustainable Retrofit, roof, hvac, lighting
Becky
It's been a few months since we gave you an update.  Lots of work going on here at our old (1874!) building.  The chimney was in dangerously bad shape and would require an expensive rebuild.  Instead, we replaced the 80% efficient furnace with a 95% efficient model.  This cooler-exhausting furnace doesn't require a chimney, so we will be able to recoup our costs in a few years by avoiding the expensive re-build of the chimney, and saving on energy costs.
Location of former chimney, no longer needed due to installation of 95% efficient furnace.
This little vent pipe replaces the crumbling brick chimney because the 95% efficient furnace vents cooler air.
You might notice our new roof is a much lighter color than before.  This will result in lower energy use for summer cooling.  Bonus:  lighter colored shingles last longer!
Light colored shingles reflect sunlight in summer, reducing cooling costs, and last longer than dark colors.
Finally, while we were waiting for the broken a/c unit to be replaced, we took the plunge and replaced our halogen track light bulbs with LED models.  This will also take a few years to recoup the cost, but with bulbs designed to last 10 years or more, we should realize great savings over the long run, not to mention the environmental bonus of saving electricity and cutting down on the heat generated by halogens.
These 13w LEDs replace 75w halogen bulbs in our vintage track lights.
We were glad to find bulbs that worked in our old dimmer track light fixtures.
Let us know what kind of sustainable retrofit you are doing and we'll feature it here next month!
